Almost three weeks ago I attended my first WordCamp of 2018. WordCamp Lancaster was held on March third and it was a great experience.

I really can’t say enough about how well the WordCamp was organized and the great job the volunteers did. I had submitted two presentations when the Call for Speakers opened up. I have a pretty nifty talk about WordPress TV which is actually about getting involved in the WordPress Community. My second submission was a Beginner Gutenberg  presentation.  I have been experimenting with Gutenberg since it first came out but I am in no way an expert.

Now……Guess which one was accepted. Yep! My Gutenberg talk.

In the days leading up to the WordCamp I have to be honest and say that I was debating my decision about talking about Gutenberg. From the very beginning, there was a lot controversy about the proposed editor. Statements ranged from “The Future of WordPress!” to “This is the end of WordPress!” were written.

I was second on the schedule, so I had some time to get in the right frame of mind. When I began my presentation, I made it very clear that I was NOT an expert! I am not a developer or a designer by any means. I even had a slide that stated that “I kNOw code”

I had a nice size crowd for my presentation!

PRO’s

CON’s

My presentation had a lot of great questions and I received a lots of compliments afterwards. I used Desktop Server for my presentation and it worked out very well. Hats off to that team! The wifi in the venue was pretty fast so I was able to go through the process of downloading the plugin and activating it. I showed the Demo page and the Documentation page as well.
My presentation had a lot of great questions! I would have to say that I ‘lost control’ of the crowd by allowing questions during the presentation. I had about 30 minutes for my time slot and I used every second. In fact, one of the organizers came up and announced we had to end to give the next speaker time to setup. So, I learned a valuable lesson. Keep control and stay on task!

I was able to get 3 quick interviews in the afternoon. Many thanks to Joe Casabona, Aaron Campbell and Birgit Pauli-Haack for taking time out of their schedules to spend time talking with me. So, two thumbs up to WordCamp Lancaster! I will look forward to next year.
