To paraphrase the original 1987 movie Wall Street, “Change Is Good”.

We have heard people make that statement throughout the years, mostly by older people. For those of us involved in technology (in one way or another) change has been a constant.

Let’s take a look at the year 1997. There were one million websites on the internet. AOL started Instant Messaging. Blogging was in its infancy.

If you go to Internet Live Stats, you can see real time numbers about the internet and technology in general. As of today there are over 974,000,000 websites, over 58,000,000,000 emails have been sent, over 1,200,000,000 Google searches, 1,120,000 blog post today, etc. I have no idea where these number come from, so take this with a grain of salt. It is interesting nonetheless.

My first online experience was a bulletin board and a few months later CompuServe. The Commodore VIC 20 was an affordable computer for me. 20MB hard drives would never be filled to capacity. I worked in the surveying profession and saw the changes taking place there. From a transit and a chain to electronic total stations, programable calculators and now robotic total stations and affordable GPS equipment.

So, with all that being said, embrace change! Attend a WordCamp or Meetup. Follow a WordPress group on Facebook, there are several to choose from.

If you don’t like change, suck it up buttercup.

Designing for Seniors

As a volunteer with WordPress.tv, I have the opportunity to see presentations from WordCamps all over the world. I recently worked on a video from WordCamp Orange County. The presentation was given by Cemal Tashan and titled Designing for Seniors. The video has some great tips for designer but is well worth watching by anyone.

You can see the slides here: http://cemaltashan.com/designing-for-seniors-wcoc/
